André LeRoy Davis - The Last Word in celebration of Black History Month.

André LeRoy Davis is an artist, a writer, a journalist, a curator, a teacher, and a professor. The Last Word is a retrospective of sorts of Mr. Davis’s work that will offer the art connoisseur political satire, various Hip-Hop related artwork and of course original The Last Word illustrations and paintings both classic and new. From September 1990 until January 2007, twelve months a year in every issue, The Last Word was the humorous, often political, head checking illustration located on the last page of The Source magazine. The exhibit is open to the public now through the end of February 2024 during regular operating hours for City Winery NYC. The Last Word will feature more than 30 prints of the paintings on display, available to purchase for a limited time.

André LeRoy Davis Artist Statement

If you’ve never been introduced to my artistry before, my humor may be outside of the box, but I tell a story within a box. Jocularity, politics, captivating likeness, well thought out ideas, detail, hidden jokes, in your face statements and a parody that works in totality to elevate the complete package that seemingly draws you in. My mission with my art is to inform, “make ‘em laugh, make ‘em think, enlighten ‘em, make ‘em double think about what they first thought and most importantly… I strive to say something with my art.”
