In January 2019, the Surabhi Ensemble visited Vietnam, Spain, Portugal and Senegal on a tour of peace and artistic collaboration. This special performance will feature some of the artistic collaborations which occurred on the tour. The Surabhi Ensemble welcomes special guests, Massamba Diop (talking drum) from Senegal, Ragavan Sai (mridangam drum) from India and Emi Tanabe (violin) from Japan. The mission of the Surabhi Ensemble is to demonstrate the connections between cultures and to teach a positive message of togetherness in creating, performing, and demonstrating new works of music and dance.
This project is partially supported by an Individual Artists Program Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events, as well as a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency, a state agency through federal funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bayless Family Foundation, The Logan Foundation of the Arts and City Winery Chicago. Tonight the Surabhi Ensemble would like to especially thank our grantors, sponsors and donors who helped make this amazing tour possible. The Surabhi Ensemble was founded by Saraswathi Ranganathan (veena) and includes Ronnie Malley (oud, vocals), Carlo Basile (Spanish guitar), Kinnari Vora (Indian/modern dance), Dhananjay Kunte (tabla), Bob Garrett (percussion), Greg Nergaard (bass) and Leticia Aravena (flamenco dance).
